Counselling and therapy are two of the most common options, and they're often confused for the same thing. They're not. Here's what sets them apart.

Here's a clear breakdown of what counselling and therapy actually are, how they differ, and how to figure out which one makes sense for what you're going through right now.


What Is Counselling?


Counselling is a structured, supportive space where you work through a specific challenge with a trained professional. It's focused, usually shorter term, and built around what's happening in your life right now.

According to the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA), counselling is a safe and confidential collaboration between qualified counsellors and clients to promote mental health and wellbeing, with counsellors using empathy and deep listening to establish positive working relationships.

In practice, people come to counselling for things like:

  • Grief and loss

  • Relationship breakdowns

  • Work stress or burnout

  • Life transitions, like a move, a divorce, or a career change

  • Feeling overwhelmed without knowing exactly why

It's worth knowing that in Australia, the title "counsellor" is not legally protected. Anyone can technically use it. This is why it's worth checking that your counsellor is registered with a recognised body like the Australian Counselling Association (ACA) or PACFA.


What Is Therapy?


Therapy, or psychotherapy, goes deeper. It tends to be longer term and looks at the patterns, beliefs, and past experiences that shape how you think, feel, and behave today. Rather than addressing one specific issue, therapy explores the bigger picture.

In Australia, therapy is typically provided by registered psychologists, psychotherapists, and psychiatrists. These practitioners use structured, evidence-based approaches like:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

  • Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)

  • Psychodynamic therapy

Psychologists in Australia must complete a minimum of six years of university training and supervised practice, and are registered with AHPRA (the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency). They can formally diagnose mental health conditions, which counsellors cannot.

  • You don't have a formal mental health diagnosis

Therapy tends to suit you if:


  • You've been struggling for a long time and nothing seems to shift

  • You're dealing with anxiety, depression, trauma, or complex emotional difficulties

  • You want to understand not just what you feel, but why

That said, the line between counselling and therapy isn't always clean. Many practitioners draw on both, and what matters most is finding someone whose approach matches what you actually need. 


Why Conventional Approaches Don't Always Work


If you've already tried therapy or counselling and walked away feeling like you understand your problems better but haven't actually resolved them, you're not alone.

A Third Option Worth Knowing About: Root Cause Therapy
